The City of Algona, Iowa (pop. 5,487) is seeking a highly motivated, collaborative, and service-oriented professional to serve as its next Public Works Director. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing the planning, operation, maintenance, and improvement of the City’s public infrastructure and municipal services, including streets, wastewater, airport, cemetery, parks, and code enforcement operations.
Description
The Public Works Director provides technical and administrative leadership for a wide range of public works functions and capital improvement projects. Responsibilities include supervising department personnel and operations; coordinating infrastructure maintenance and construction activities; managing equipment purchases and fleet needs; assisting with budget preparation and long-term capital planning; and ensuring the efficient delivery of public services. The Director also serves as a key representative of the City by responding to citizen concerns, coordinating with contractors and outside agencies, and helping resolve operational issues in a timely and professional manner.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, engineering, construction management, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the duties of the position. Candidates should have at least 3-5 years of management or supervisory experience in public works, utilities, or a related field.
Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential. Experience supervising staff, capital projects, and working collaboratively with consultants, contractors, and the public is highly desirable. A valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one prior to employment, is required.
